Most Listened To

Last year I wrote about my favourite new tracks each and every month, there were so many, it was a lot of fun to listen to and collate all these new bits of music. For 2018, I thought I'd switch it up a bit and focus on what I am actually listening to the most.

Using Obscurify I found out the top 10 songs I listened in the six weeks leading up to 08/02/18 and have written a little spiel on each below. I find any and all Spotify data completely intriguing so I spend far too much time on this site.

1) ALL I HAVE - CHARLIE BARNES

I'm a really big fan of Charlie, he's such a talented musician and songwriter and this track is where he really shines. 'All I Have' is the first single from his upcoming album Oceanography, which comes out in a few short weeks. If you like upbeat acoustics, this guy is for you.

I recently interviewed Charlie for work, he is very genuinely one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I've had a chat with.

MUSIC OF THE MONTH - DECEMBER 2017

It's time for the final installment of Music of the Month 2017! Will this series be continuing into 2018? I haven't decided on that yet, so we'll find out.

This series has been a completely fun way of forcing myself to give new tracks time, to discover new artists and to challenge myself to review a song in a couple of sentences.

Enough about that, let's get into the best music of December!

I Know You - Acoustic - Craig David + Bastille



Taking a production laden track with a focus on it's twist on the conventional 'drop' and turning it into an acoustic isn't an easy task. Somehow Craig David and Bastille have pulled it off by slowing down their vocals, relaxing it all and changing the entire tune of the song, yet they still absolutely crush it.

I don't think anyone ever expected to see Oh Wonder's Landslide sampled alongside Nicki and Uzi, least of all Oh Wonder. This is a magical, mystical collab that works absurdly well, much better than it ever should. It's a testament to all involved's incredible talent.

MY LIFE IN MUSIC.

Music has always been a big part of my life, for the last year in particular. I wanted to share some of the artists that have had a lasting effect on me and my life today! Going in chronological order, let's start with...

KATE NASH AND AMY WINEHOUSE

My sister Suzanne had the albums 'Made of Bricks' and 'Back to Black', for me, two of the most iconic albums of the 00's. I listened to them constantly, and even now I play them on the regs. These albums came into my life during those very important pre-teen years when I was just beginning to form my own musical tastes, and whilst the topics of these songs were beyond a 12 year old's comprehension, I still hung onto every word I went to see one of Kate Nash's 10th Anniversary Made of Bricks shows and it was frigging lit. (I'm writing this before I go, I assume it will be lit?) 

I can now confirm it was lit.

This stripped back track from Banks (say that four times fast) is the anti-thesis to songs like 'Brain' which we know her so well for. This song is built to chill too, but it feels like such a 'real' and tough track.

Soundtrack to our messed up world

To not beat around the bush, our world is pretty f*cked up at the minute, although it's always been a bit of a terrible place.

Now more than ever, we exist in uncertain times. At least this is the most uncertain and strange period of time since I've been on Earth anyway. (Not referring to my birth, I'm referring to the time my home planet dropped me off to never pick me up)

All over the world people are using their voices to express their anger, confusion, sadness, shock, sorrow, guilt, determination. We live in uncertain times. 

Music is an art form, one used by so many to capture a moment in time, to capture whatever the hell we live in right now. 

Here's a couple of tracks appropriate for the current state of things. State to be interpreted in the colloquial meaning of 'fucked up state'

Top 10 Albums of 2016

The year is coming to a close, so it's time to look back at some of the amazing albums we were blessed with this year. 2016 was a cracking year in music, here are 10 of my favourite albums that were released this year. These are in no particular order, don't make me choose a favourite. Don't be that cruel.

Christine and the Queens - Chaleur Humaine

This was originally released in France in 2014, but didn't make it's way over the English channel, or onto my Spotify, until this year.

Chaleur Humaine is a strong album, lacking any filler, with lyrics intertwining two languages, heavy beats and soft flows. Chaleur Humaine feels appropriate for all times of day, for all moods. I could dance to 'Tilted' in a club, listen to 'Science Fiction' in the gym, but most of all I jam out to it in the house.

My Year in Music

It's time for all of that year end type stuff, and I'm kicking off with a short post on the music I've listened to this year. This isn't my favourite, or what I consider the best, these are the stats Spotify e-mailed to me on my music consumption throughout the year.

Last year I made a post on my Spotify Year in Music, sadly they axed this featured for 2016. Everyone has been given a customised playlist (Spotify Wrapped), although today everyone should be receiving an e-mail containing some more stats! This seems to be in response to many, including myself, complaining about this year end feature compared to last's.

Off the track (listing)

Hello!

The best version of a song isn't always the 'regular' version. Take the first song in this list as an example, you always heard the Lana Del Rey x Cedric Gervais remix of 'Summertime Sadness' rather than the original! Both are great, that's not to say I don't love some Lana Del Rey on her own, I well and truly do.

Anyway, let's get on with it! This list includes remixes, covers, acoustic versions, other performances, anything that isn't the regular!

This reminds me of being freshly 18 and going out clubbing with my friends all the time to bask in being able to drink alcohol legally. This was on all the time that summer, and I always had it on repeat, even though I would usually take a Lana solo song over anything like this.

Bastille 'Wild World' Review

Today I'm writing something a little bit different than the photo heavy Japan posts that I have been posting for the last couple of weeks/months, and that is a review of Bastille's second album 'Wild World', released September 9th 2016.

I've only gotten into Bastille recently, and now I realise how much time I wasted without them. I prepped for V Festival with them and recognised what I'd missed out on. Then I died and went to heaven during their V set, before heading back down to a rainy Weston park. Here we are a few weeks later, and a day hasn't gone by without Bastille blasting from my phone, TV, laptop - whatever I can force to play their music.

I've never written an album review before, so let's see how this goes with a short first forray.
