INTERVIEWED: NIK SPELLER

Welcome to INTERVIEWED, a series of discussions and chats with creators of all kinds.

Today we're blessed by the company of a man with the eye for manmade structures and a wizard of words, Nik Speller.

D: What do you do online as a creator?

N: I’m a writer, first and foremost. That’s why I started blogging (all those years ago); I was looking for a ‘creative outlet’ and decided writing about food and restaurants was the way to go, as - at the time - it was pretty much the only thing I was interested in.

Since then, I’ve boosted my photography skills a little, helped in no small part by working with Mat on his blog, Buckets and Spades.

My photography has mainly been for the blog, when Mat’s had to be in front of the camera and needed some help in getting the perfect shot. I’ve also started a bit of a sideline in architectural photography over on Instagram - totally by accident, I’ll add. It was just something I started doing on a dull, boring day off, and as folks seemed to like it, I’ve kept it on.

Writing is still my main passion, though, and - thankfully - I’ve been able to upgrade from writing for my own (very small) food blog to contributing to Buckets and Spades (and a few others) on a whole range of very cool projects. Fortunately, I’ve also been able to carry writing into my day-to-day work too: writing articles on influencer marketing and the digital world in general, which seem to have really resonated with people.

J: Most people who follow me will already know that I blog - I like to share my favourite fashion looks and grooming products, I'm a big fan of natural, cruelty free beauty, so I'll continue to push that agenda. I enjoyed creating content for others so much that I decided to do it for myself.

Switching Off.

I find it very hard to switch off.

This is a real old pic now, but let's roll with it.

I'm writing this as I sit on a train back to London on a sunny Sunday evening, the perfect time to relax and forget the rest of the world. I first thought of this post on a train out of London on a rainy Friday evening, again, another great time to sit back and completely turn off. Instead I found myself scrawling away into one of the many notepads that sit at the bottom of my bags and coat pockets.

It's hard to draw the line of 'motivated go-getter' and 'workaholic', or rather 'hobbyholic' (doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?) as the things I find myself caught up in aren't exactly paying the bills. I'm always thinking about what I can write, what I can create, how I can turn the moment I'm experiencing into something that I can relive over and over. How can I make better use of my time than hitting 'play next' on Netflix?

This is the curse of being your own boss in some capacity, I imagine being freelance and self-employed full time only magnifies this intensely. There's no end of the day when it's your own projects, there's no leaving the office when it's your own home. Many of the boundaries seperating life from work simply don't exist. How can you say that you've done enough or been productive enough when there aren't set times to get your work done?

When you're in charge, you're in charge. Be that with thinking of content, of thinking of new ideas, but you're also in charge of yourself and keeping you happy, healthy and as stress-free as possible. That's a lot of responsibility for one person!

How do you find switching off? Is it easy, is it hard, is it something you're an expert at or something you've never considered?

INTERVIEWED: VIBETWENTYFIVE

Welcome to #INTERVIEWED, a series of discussions with creators of all kinds. Today we're joined by my talented friend, with a fashion sense I can only be jealous of, Daniel of vibetwentyfive!

DG: What exactly is it you create and do online?

DV25: I'm very new to this, but I run a men's fashion and lifestyle blog online. After many discussions with friends trying to decide if it was a good idea, Vibetwentyfive was eventually born.

However I put a lot of time and focus on my Instagram, I love to get the feel of which location/building etc. that I am in to translate in the photo, so it's not always about the clothes that I'm wearing.

I work with a really great photographer (Calum) to try and capture this, you should check out his stuff!

The Weight of Blogging

I discussed a lot of this recently in my 200th blogpost, but I'm going to carry on anyway.

I feel like I've found my feet within the blogging world. I consistently post, I know what content I like to blog about, I've surrounded myself with a group of online friends, my views are slowly creeping up and I work tirelessly on it.

Here's a cheesy happy pic to counteract the negativity.
