The album of 2017 thus far - Lorde's Melodrama.

I almost didn't write this review. I didn't want to write something which seemed overwhelmingly positive, that read as if I loved this simply because I well and truly love Lorde's music and art. However I'm struggling to find many flaws in Melodrama, and that's why I have to write this.

Lorde's sophomore album largely follows a messy night of emotions, alcohol, music and vibes. It's a house party of an album. It's truly like peaking into your past, those late teen parties that would be amazing, something you'd either look forward to for weeks or something you ended up at extremely last minute. You'd know there would be drama, you know you'd say something dumb and drink too much and dance with your friends and people you've not seen before or since.

The relatability is high. And it's even higher because Melodrama clearly wasn't written to be relatable, it was written to be real; it's exactly that which makes it so incredible relatable. Sober and Homemade Dynamite remind me of so many college parties, of so many drunken nights out in Liverpool that started with a few drinks in my extreme-edge-of-the-city-centre flat.

Lyrically it's a wonder, 'Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark' and the simple 'They'll hang us in the Louvre, down the back, but who cares- still the Louvre' are my personal favourites. Melodrama is a painting made of words, metaphors and images. It's all any writers dream of, I'm a writer in a very different capacity than Ella, yet I still long to turn my keyboard clack into brush strokes.

My one 'complaint' would be the album length, it's pretty short after waiting 4 years for an album. However, unlike how I've felt with other albums coming after a long wait, I believe this has 0 filler. Each track is important and carefully crafted, all a piece in the puzzle of melodrama. Nothing is out of place, nothing else is needed, Melodrama may be short but she is complete.

Melodrama is exactly what it needs to be: a self-referencing masterpiece explaining the messiness of relationship, parties and life in your late teens. I struggle to give this album anything less than a perfect score. 4 years was a hell of a long time to wait, but I'd wait double that if it meant Lorde LP3 would be as incredible as this.

Good going Ella.

Lorde has been one of my favourite artists for a long time. Pure Heroine has had a profound effect on my life, I truly hope Melodrama can do the same.

Buy Melodrama on iTunes, stream it on Spotify and sure as hell go see Lorde on tour.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Review

The first in the Star Wars Anthology series has finally hit the big screen, and after years of scrutiny and doubt, we can finally pass our own judgement.

This movie was great. There's this review in four words. Here's it in five: This movie was fucking great.

Prepare yourself for minor spoilers. No plot is given away, however those wishing to go in blind probably shouldn't read this.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Review

The long-awaited Harry Potter spin off is here! Many, including myself, weren't too excited by the prospect of more Harry Potter, for me it was as we already have an incredible story from that universe. Not only that, it was a complete and cohesive story, and after The Cursed Child (my thoughts on which you can watch here) I wasn't feeling too optimistic. Nor was I enthused by the announcement of there being 5 films in this series, and I'm still not sure how I feel about that.

As a warning, there will be SPOILERS!!

Lady Gaga - 'Joanne' Review

After a few long, dark years, Lady Gaga has finally released her fifth studio album: Joanne.

Joanne is named for Gaga's aunt, her father's younger sister, who passed before Gaga's birth. Gaga believes she shares a deep connection with Joanne, and now not only does Gaga's album share the name; a particularly special track from the album does too.

Bastille 'Wild World' Review

Today I'm writing something a little bit different than the photo heavy Japan posts that I have been posting for the last couple of weeks/months, and that is a review of Bastille's second album 'Wild World', released September 9th 2016.

I've only gotten into Bastille recently, and now I realise how much time I wasted without them. I prepped for V Festival with them and recognised what I'd missed out on. Then I died and went to heaven during their V set, before heading back down to a rainy Weston park. Here we are a few weeks later, and a day hasn't gone by without Bastille blasting from my phone, TV, laptop - whatever I can force to play their music.

I've never written an album review before, so let's see how this goes with a short first forray.

Captain America: Civil War Spoiler Free Review

I'm going preface this with saying that Civil War may be my favourite Marvel film yet. Better than 2012's The Avengers, better than Iron Man 3, hell even better than The Winter Soldier! The only one it may not beat for me is Captain America: The First Avenger, but I just love that film so much.

Civil War has been dubbed 'Avengers 2.5', and after seeing this film I fully understand that. We have a whole host of characters, new and old, rather than the typical 'stand-alone' Marvel affair, which would feature 1 or 2 of the Avengers. However, unlike The Winter Soldier, we aren't seeing just Steve and Natasha fight together, we're seeing the Avengers (and some newcomers), splitting into two factions and facing off over conflicting views on a piece of legislation affecting their activities as protectors of the world.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Spoiler Free Review!

Last night, at 00:01, I sat in a theatre completely sold out, full of Star Wars fans anticipating the start of The Force Awakens, the 7th film in the Star Wars series, and the 7th chronologically.

The film is set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, which left the Empire crushed, however now, the First Order has risen, and the rebel alliance has had to evolve into the Resistance to survive. We follow a mix of fresh faces and well known old friends in the fight to bring peace to the galaxy once more.

This will be spoiler free, as far as possible, I don't want to give any plot points away.

Avengers: Age of Ultron Review and Discussion

Hello everyone!

Last night, I went to the midnight showing of Avengers: Age of Ultron. I am a HUGE Marvel fan, specifically of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so the wait for Avengers 2 has killed me. I adore the first film, and whilst the plot of Avengers 1 is nothing special, it holds a special place in my heart for simply being awesome.

Anyway yes, onto Avengers 2.
