IKEBUKURO, TOKYO, JAPAN

This morning is one that will stick out in my memory forever, I made a full post featuring pictures of Ikebukuro in a post around a year ago, you can find that here.

In the evening of the 21st I found out I wouldn't be able to interview for my dream graduate job. I'd been shortlisted, but the interview took place whilst I was still in Japan as at this point I still had almost 3 weeks left in the country. I was pretty much told to not bother contacting them anymore as if I wasn't in the UK at the time of interview, I was out. This was the first of MANY rejections I received when searching for a grad job, I got used to it pretty quickly, but this one stung.

Asakusa Sensoji Temple + the road to the Skytree

Today we head off to Tokyo's Sensoji Temple. 

Sensoji is not only one of the premiere tourist spots in Tokyo, it is actually the oldest temple in the city, dating back to the year 645. 

The gate you can see above is known as the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate), and is the first gate you enter on your journey to Sensoji's main grounds.

Back in Tokyo, and after 26 posts, we are nearing the end of these finally!

On one of my final days I met up with my friend Eggy, we've known each other on Twitter for a really long time, so it was amazing to finally meet her! She came all the way down from Sendai, because she's the true MVP! I also met Eggy's friend Ayu, who was really lovely also!


I passed this shrine whilst on my way to meet Eggy in Shinjuku, I'm just throwing it in here as all torii gates are pretty.

Back to Tokyo! An intro to Asakusa and Conveyor Belt Sushi

Welcome back to Tokyo! The final leg of our trip to Japan.

After visiting Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Miyajima, we came back to Tokyo for a few days before our flight.

We started in the Asakusa area of Tokyo, and we booked a hotel this time! The hotel was bloody incredible, it wasn't expensive, but it housed a mall, and hosted weddings whilst we stayed.

Free! Cafe

Today let's take a trip to the now closed Free! cafe in Akihabara!

The Free! cafe had been open for months, however it shut its doors a few weeks back. I'm sure some variation will open again, anime cafes come and go extremely often, I think they usually stay open for 6 or so weeks.

And damn if they aren't popular! You often reserve a seat via a lottery system, you apply for slots and if you're lucky enough to get a seat at a certain time, you can go!

Odaiba!

Hello and welcome to Odaiba! 

Odaiba is a manmade island located within the Tokyo Bay, initially built for defensive purposes 160 years ago!

Odaiba is famous for being the setting/basis for Digimon, among other things!


Here is Palette Town, a huge shopping plaza, alongside the Daikanransha (the ferris wheel), which is technically a part of Palette Town itself.

Capcom Bar

Today I'm covering our visit to the Capcom Bar in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

The aptly named bar is themed with all sorts of Capcom games, such as the Phoenix Wright series, Sengoku Basara, Street Fighter and Resident Evil.

I'm not the biggest gamer, and whilst I've dabbled in a few of these, I wouldn't say I were a fan of any and so a lot of the charm was lost on me. It was an interesting restaurant/bar to visit anyway!

I don't have many pictures of this as the lighting was not great, plus it was rather cramped, so it wasn't easy to get up and move around for photographs.

Tokyo Tower

Today I will be covering one of Tokyo's most iconic and most visited sites - Tokyo Tower! Tokyo Tower is located in Minato, Tokyo. 

As you can see, it is very obviously inspired by the Eiffel Tower, in fact, it's taller than it's French sister! Tokyo Tower is the second tallest structure in Japan, being only surpassed by the Tokyo Skytree (which will be covered at a much later date, I visited Osaka and Hiroshima before the Skytree!).

ARTNIA Cafe

Today we're covering ARTNIA cafe, located in Shinjuku, specifically Shinjuku Eastside Square.

ARTNIA is the official store of Square Enix, famous for games such as Dragon Quest, Bravely Default and of course, the Final Fantasy series.

As a failure in life, I've never played any of these, apart from Final Fantasy Dissidia, and demos of others. I know the characters, but that's about it! Whereas Fae is a very big FF fan, so we went for breakfast one day!

Even though I don't really know about anything with regards to Square Enix, I had a great time at the cafe anyway, good food, good drinks and good decor! There's nothing to complain about!

Tokyo Disney Sea - Part 1

Tokyo Disney Sea! Not to be confused with SeaWorld, Tokyo Disney Sea is the only park of its kind in the world. There are no other Disney Sea parks outside of Tokyo...well Chiba, Disney technically lies outside of the Tokyo prefecture, but we'll keep that one quiet.

Tokyo Disney Sea is often rated the best Disney Park of them all! It has a distinctly grown up vibe compared to others (or at least the other parks I have been to; Paris and Orlando), yet has the standard Disney charm we love! 

Disney Sea is much smaller than other parks, however this meant that we could conquer most of it in a day! What made Disney Sea extra special to me is the Indiana Jones ride!!! I was excited for months about that ride!

We started the day at around 5am, made it to Disney Sea the minute it opened, and got fastpasses for Indiana Jones straight away, thanks to our friend Gin who knows Tokyo Disney Parks like the back of her hand!


Even the monorail there is so Disney! You can see the windows are Mickey shaped too!

Akihabara

Hello, today we're covering Akihabara, the electric town! Akihabara is famous for embracing the 'otaku' culture, and so anime, video games, idols, manga, etc. are all over the place! As are electrical goods, which is where the area gets it's nickname!

We visited Akiba two or three times I think, I didn't buy too much, but did walk away with a few things! Osaka also had it's own electric town, which will be covered in about 17 months if I continue with these posts at the rate I'm doing thus far.

Meiji Jingu

Back on the Japan post hype! I really need to churn these out, this is still like day 4 or something of my 26 day trip. I went in MARCH, and it's July and I'm still to go through my pictures, how bad is that?!

In the afternoon we visited Meiji Jingu shrine in Shibuya, Tokyo! It's pretty much in Harajuku, which is also part of Shibuya, although I feel like I always interpret them as two completely separate areas, as when you think of Shibuya you think of the crossing, when you think of Harajuku you think of Takeshita Street!

Meiji Jingu shrine is dedicated to the Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken. It has been around for about 100 years, with parts rebuilt due to the Tokyo air raids in World War II.
